Mari Boya scores more points after a great weekend in Barcelona
• In round 2 of Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, held in Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, Mari Boya achieved an excellent fifth place on the first race.
• His pace proved that he was capable of being at top positions throughout the entire weekend, but a problem in Q2 left him with no chance to fight for the points in Race 2
• Boya: “It would have been great to score some more points, but I am really satisfied with the pace and the performance we had at home”.
Barcelona-Catalunya Circiut hosted the second round on Formula Regional European Championship by
Alpine. The series raced once again as part of Formula 1’s support bill. Mari Boya faced the event with
extra motivation since it was his home race and there were fans on the grandstands. The Spaniard had a
superb weekend and is consolidating as one of the most consistent and promising rookies on the grid.
Boya had previously had a good debut round in Imola. Him and his team, Van Amersfoort Racing, has the
goal to confirm in Montmeló the positive sensations they had in Italy. The 17-year old driver did not take
long to show his talent and performance and claimed third place on the first qualifying session, his best
result of the season.
Unluckily, Boya started Q2 with damage on his front wing. The condition of his car made it impossible to set a competitive lap time. Despite the issue, he finished the session and qualified on 31st position on the grid for Race 2.
On the first race, Boya dropped two places at the start. When he was settled on fifth, an accident at the
back of the field caused the deployment of the Safety Car. More than half of the race passed during the
neutralization. After the restart, Boya stayed on the group that was fighting for third but had no
opportunity to try a move and gain positions. He therefore finished the race in fifth position. Great result
for Boya, who was able to finish within the Top 5 in only his third race on the series.
Race 2 was conditioned by the starting position from the beginning. Despite this circumstance, Boya’s performance was good. The Spaniard gained several positions on the first lap and kept his VAR away from the incidents that happened during the opening lap. He made an 11-positions comeback and finished the race in twentieth position.
After this round, Boya has fifteen points on the championship and remains the third best rookie. The
Spanish driver is proving to have pace and potential to fight at the top, confirming and improving the
overall feeling after Imola. Keeping this level of performance will be the key to clinch more good results
for the remainder of the season.
Boya: “Boya: I am happy with the results obtained this weekend. Sure, it would have been great to score some
more points, but I am really satisfied with the pace and the performance we had at home. We are where
we want to be, and we just have to keep working like this to have more positive performances on track. I
thank the team for their huge effort they make so we can be at these positions. Also, thanks to my family,
my coach and to everyone who came to the track to watch us race.”
Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine will be back in two weeks. The series will be racing
in one of the most iconic venues of the motorsport world, Monaco Circuit. Boya will race at the legendary
street circuit in what will be, once again, a round part of F1’s Grand Prix of Monaco.
