Mari Boya, back into the points in Zandvoort

Post Zandvoort

The young Spaniard shown the best version of himself again and managed to score points in the two races of the weekend.

His performance at Van Amersfoort Racing’s home race was excellent, with a fourth position in Qualifying 1 as the highlight of the event.

Boya: “I am satisfied with the amazing job done alongside the team. We are convinced that we will keep progressing by working like this”.

In Round 5 of Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine, held in Zandvoort Circuit, Mari Boya proved he had left behind the struggles he faced in Paul Ricard. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver, at his team’s home race, managed to regain the positive feeling and competitive pace he had in the first four meeting of the season.

After a Friday conditioned by difficult weather conditions throughout free practice sessions, Boya’s Saturday began with and exceptional performance. The Spanish driver secured in Qualifying 1 fourth place on the grid for Race 1.

The race got underway and Boya positioned himself in fifth place after the start. Overtaking in Zandvoort was, as expected, a difficult challenge, but Boya was able to put the pressure on the car ahead while keeping the ones chasing him down under control. Unluckily, the Catalan driver lost two positions after a Safety Car restart. Boya confirmed his return to the top 10 by seeing the chequered flag in seventh.

Sunday action started with the second qualifying session. It was a messy session, in which two incidents caused long Full Course Yellow periods. The time the drivers had to set their lap times was therefore significantly reduced. Despite these circumstances, Boya qualified on a decent tenth position.

Boya gained a position at the start of Race 2 and held on to ninth place. As it had happened on the first race, overtakes were rare. The Spanish rookie, however, put the pressure on the driver running on eighth, and was close to overtake him a few times. On the other hand, he also performed excellent manoeuvres to defend his position from the driver behind him.

It was, to sum up, a positive weekend for Boya. The driver regained confidence and pace, and shown his potential. The job done alongside the team is leading Boya towards the expected results. The Spaniard keeps showing himself as one of the top rookies on the grid, and also as a competitive, fast and consistent driver.

Boya: “I am very happy with the performance we had throughout this weekend, specially after what happened in Paul Ricard. I felt comfortable and competitive again, and that is great. I think our pace could have brought us better results, but I am satisfied with the amazing job done alongside the team. We are convinced that we will keep progressing by working like this. I thank the team, my coach, my family and everyone working to make this possible”.

Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine faces now a long, five-week break, which will allow Boya to rest in order to be back stronger than ever. The second half of the season is to start in July 23-25 at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps Circuit (Belgium).
