Unfortunate season finale for Mari Boya in Monza

• The season comes to and end after a final round in Monza, where Boya did not score points despite good pace.

• He ends the season on 14th position on the final standings and fourth on the Rookies’ Championship.

• Boya: “We could have scored many more points, so we hold on to that feeling, knowing that we are capable of being higher up. Now we are fully focused in 2022“.

The 2021 Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine season came to its end this weekend at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Mari Boya concluded his campaign on the series without obtaining the expected result at the finale, but with a positive overall feeling at the end of the season.

It was obvious since the earliest session that on-track position and drafts would play an essential role to set competitive times. It was also seen that the grid was incredibly tight, so every hundredth of a second would be crucial to gain positions.

Boya shown a competitive pace on qualifying as he finished less that three tenths from pole. Unluckily, the gaps were so tight that his time was only enough to qualify in 13th position on the grid.

On the race, draft was once again very important in order to make up places. Boya was sensational in the opening laps. The young Spaniard did not take long to reach the top 10 and had the pace to keep progressing. His race, however, unfortunately ended earlier than expected. While fighting with another driver, his rival made an unfair defensive move which damaged the nº. 64 car’s suspension and forced Boya to retire.

Sunday started with a qualifying session held on a damp, drying track. Boya proved he was capable of being among the top drivers but could not finish his last lap and qualified on 13th place.

On the final race of the season, Boya maintained the position where he started from. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver tried to make up places, but the constant interruptions -several Safety Cars and a red flag- left him unable to progress. He finished the race in 12th.

Boya: “It was not our best weekend, but I can say we are happy with the outcome of the season. We could have scored many more points, so we hold on to that feeling, knowing that we are capable of being higher up. Now we are fully focused in 2022, really looking to using everything we have learnt this year to improve on the next season. Many thanks to Van Amersfoort Racing for the job they have done to make us fast. I also would like to thank my coach, my manager, my family, and everyone who has been supporting me this year. 2022 will surely be better!”.

The season is now finished and Boya has reached the objective that were set at the beginning. Coming up into a European, highly competitive championship, the Spaniard quickly adapted to the series and learnt at a positive pace to improve weekend after weekend. The final results could have better, but the sensations after the debut are good. Boya ends his maiden Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine in 14th place on the final standings with 51 points. He is also fourth on the Rookies’ Standings.

That marks the end of Mari Boya’s debut year in Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine. Now it is time to rest and learn from all the obtained experience throughout the year to be stronger in 2022.
